Riviera Maya outperforms Cancun in hotel occupancy

According to hotel occupancy data released by the Secretary of Tourism, Miguel Torruco Marqués, between January and August of this year in beach destinations, the Riviera Maya outperformed Cancun by almost 10 percentage points.

Akumal and Playacar, located in the Riviera Maya, registered occupancy rates of 84.9% and 83.8% respectively during the eight months of the year, while Cancun averaged 76.1%. Other destinations were also above Cancun, such as Cabo San Lucas with 79.6% and Nuevo Nayarit with 76.2%. Puerto Vallarta did not surpass them, registering only 74.6%.

Among other data from Datatur, hotel occupancy in cities registered the arrival of 31.4 million tourists to hotels and beach resorts 26.4 million tourists, the latter with a growth of 1.8% compared to the same period of 2022.

Likewise, during January and August 2023 the country obtained a hotel occupancy of 60.2%, in 70 centers monitored by Datatur, which means 4.3% more compared to the same period of 2022.

As REPORTUR.mx reported at the beginning of October, the Federal Ministry of Tourism (SECTUR) highlighted Cancun as the destination with the highest hotel occupancy during the week of September 18-24, with 68.9%, while the Hotel Association of Cancun, Puerto Morelos and Isla Mujeres reported only 64.4% (Cancun: hoteliers and SECTUR disagree on occupancy rate).
