Although Airbnb is in the Dominican Republic under the radar of tourism authorities and the public and private sectors, which are seeking to sign an agreement that will regularize its operation in the country, the vacation rental platform mentions Santo Domingo as one of the main fashionable destinations for winter travel and vacations.
According to a recent report by the platform on travel trends in the last third of the year, U.S. travelers are looking for the warmth of “places like Santo Domingo, San Salvador, El Salvador, Oaxaca, Mexico; Havana, Cuba; La Fortuna, Costa Rica; Cali, Colombia and Culebra, Puerto Rico”.
Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo and Nassau are also popular among the group, Airbnb found.
Interestingly, the accommodation-sharing service also found that the most searched Airbnb categories for winter travel and vacations are “incredible pools,” “beach,” “tropical,” “national parks” and “iconic cities.” Other categories include popular “incredible views,” “golf,” “cabins,” “countryside,” and “surfing.”
All of the above categories are found as part of the supply that the DR has to offer, where the Ministry of Tourism (Mitur), in a recent report on the sector indicates that 59.7% of the supply of lodging rooms in the country is on platforms such as Airbnb.
Meanwhile, globally, Asia is one of the most attractive regions for year-end travel 2023.
