Tourism Cluster and AHSD: News in tourism

The Santo Domingo Tourism Cluster (CTSD) and the Santo Domingo Hotel Association (AHSD) presented at the DATE 2024 tourism fair the novelties offered by the Dominican capital under the concept Santo Domingo, More than History.

Fabeth Martinez, executive director of the Tourism Cluster and the AHSD, explained that in 2024 Santo Domingo is consolidating its position as the undisputed capital of the Caribbean.

“Today our city adds new cultural proposals that exalt and expand the already acclaimed historical proposal as the Primate Capital of America. Through Ceiztur, the facades of the city’s main monuments have been cleaned and preserved, including the Museum of the Royal Houses, the Alcazar de Colon, the Pantheon of the Homeland, the churches of Las Mercedes and Regina Angelorum, and the Puerta de la Misericordia was restored. The offer of the Santo Domingo Fortress Museum (Fortaleza Ozama) was also renewed, with an updated museography and anchored in visual and investment experiences, which has been the main novelty in recent weeks”, he said.

Cathedral Museum of Santo Domingo

In May, the Museum of the Cathedral of Santo Domingo will open its doors, which will tell the history of faith in America and the construction and evolution of the Primate Metropolitan Cathedral of America. Likewise, the historic center will have a pedestrian orientation system and tourist signage that will allow visitors to enjoy the history of the city through different routes. “The renovation, modernization and enhancement of museums, temples and historical monuments has fostered an experience beyond the historical offerings,” said Martinez.

Economic stability of tourism

For her part, Yudit Garcia, president of the Santo Domingo Hotel Association, said that the country’s capital is a reflection of the country’s economic stability.

“We have seen growth in all sectors of our economy, with tourism as the indisputable engine of these results. So much so, that the hotel and tourism infrastructure inventory in the capital has increased exponentially in recent months, with the opening of three new properties in the Marriott hotel portfolio: Aloft Piantini, Marriott Piantini and Courtyard Pinantini, which in addition to rooms of standards that endorse their brands, offer spaces for meetings, congresses and conventions of large format and an offer of new trendy restaurants,” he said.

Turismo Santo DomingoAccording to the directors, two new hotel properties will start operations in June: Hyatt Centric Santo Domingo Piantini, a proposal that expands the luxury offer in the central area of the city, and the Kimpton Las Mercedes hotel, which expands the availability of hotels and restaurants in the historic center.

In terms of air travel and tourist arrivals, they said that Santo Domingo continues to grow and break records.

Air traffic growth

They highlighted the growth in air traffic at the José Francisco Peña Gómez International Airport of the Americas (AILA), which received a total of 5.6 million passengers in 2023. So far this year, the capital has received close to 1 MM passengers, a figure that represents a 10% growth when compared to the same period in 2023, and +13% when compared to the pre-pandemic period.

Both entities also highlighted the important investments announced in the airports serving the capital city, operated by Aerodom and VINCI Airports, which contemplate the construction of a new terminal and improvements to the existing terminal, in response to the significant growth of air routes experienced in the country, with tourism as the spearhead of development.

They also highlighted the recovery of cruise ship arrivals at the Don Diego and Sansouci ports, which are making various infrastructure improvements and a substantial investment in the promotion and positioning of these important assets, which complement the city’s tourism.
