The Civil Aviation Board of the Dominican Republic (JAC) in the last extraordinary session approved 30 new routes to the national operator DW Dominican Wings, S.A. (AraJet). In addition, routes were approved for other international operations such as Avianca and Azur Air.
The JAC approved AraJet’s application after going through a public hearing, and the airline is now authorized to operate scheduled and non-scheduled passenger and cargo air services on international operations from the Dominican Republic to: United States, Cuba, Colombia, Costa Rica, Mexico, Panama, Peru, Haiti, Trinidad and Tobago, Netherlands (Netherlands Antilles) and France (French Caribbean Antilles), using Boeing 737-800 aircraft.
The company expects to start operations in January 2022, according to José Ernesto Marte Piantini, President of the JAC.
AraJet’s (formerly flycana) main base will be Santo Domingo (SDQ), the Dominican Republic’s second busiest airport, and it expects to receive the first of its five Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft soon, which will make it the third airline in the Caribbean to operate the U.S. manufacturer’s fourth-generation aircraft.
The addition of the Boeing 737 MAX 8 allows the airline to explore medium-range destinations in South America, reaching cities with strong demand to the Dominican Republic such as Bogota, Colombia (BOG) and Lima, Peru (LIM).
From the United States, the Dominican Republic’s main international market, AraJet has the possibility of entering markets with high passenger demand such as New York (JFK) and Newark (EWR), the main destinations in Santo Domingo (SDQ), as well as taking advantage of South Florida destinations such as Miami (MIA), Orlando (MCO) and Fort Lauderdale (FLL).
