Punta Cana consolidates its position as the preferred tourist destination for U.S. travelers

Allianz Partners USA has shared the results of its annual Top 10 Holiday Destinations survey, which reveals the places Americans are most looking forward to visiting in winter 2023.

After reviewing more than 3.1 million round-trip flight itineraries departing from U.S. airports starting Dec. 16 and returning by Dec. 29, the travel insurance and assistance company found that international travel is on the rise for the holiday season, accounting for 21% of bookings, up from just 11% last year.

When it comes to foreign travel, many Americans have their sights set on Cancun, Mexico, which holds the number one spot for the sixth consecutive year in 2023.

Two other Mexican destinations, San Jose del Cabo (third) and Puerto Vallarta (sixth), are also in the top 10 internationally.

Behind Cancun are London, Montego Bay, Jamaica and Punta Cana, which also ranked in the top five. After Puerto Vallarta, the top 10 is made up of Nassau, Bahamas; Paris, France; Oranjestad, Aruba and Providenciales, Turks and Caicos.

In the case of the Dominican Republic, Punta Cana moved up two places from number 7 in 2022 to number 5 in 2023.

While the positions have changed, the top 10 international destinations have remained the same since 2021.

Meanwhile, U.S. domestic travel accounts for 79% of itineraries, up from 89% in 2022, Allianz found.

For the third consecutive year, New York City ranks as the most sought-after domestic vacation travel destination, beating out other entertainment capitals such as Orlando and Las Vegas. Los Angeles and Atlanta round out the top five, followed by Salt Lake City, Seattle, Phoenix, Fort Lauderdale and Minneapolis.

Salt Lake City and Fort Lauderdale replaced Boston and Dallas-Fort Worth a year ago.
