The President of the Republic, Luis Abinader, created the Cabinet for the Fight against Sargasso, as an advisory council, which will be responsible for proposing and coordinating the execution of public policies aimed at reversing the effects generated by this floating macroalgae on the beaches and coasts of the Dominican Republic.
The measure is contained in Decree number 379-23 dated this Monday, August 21, 2023.
The Cabinet is composed of the Minister of Tourism, the Minister of Environment and Natural Resources, the Minister of Economy, Planning and Development, the Executive Vice President of the National Council for Climate Change and Clean Development Mechanism, the Commander General of the Dominican Republic Navy, a representative of the Ministry of the Presidency and a representative of the Association of Hotels and Tourism (ASONAHORES), representing the private sector.
With this provision, the Executive Branch actively responds to the multiple alerts that society and the tourism sector have been or product of the intensification of the arrival of sargassum to the Dominican coasts each year.
This decree seeks to articulate the policies, plans and projects related to the fight against sargasso, to establish the actions to be executed by the members of the Cabinet, as well as to promote the participation of the private sector in the solution to this national problem.
Likewise, the Cabinet may suggest to the Executive Branch or international organizations, financial support for the established solutions. In addition, it may invite to its sessions other government agencies or the private sector related to the environment and tourism in order to diversify the dialogue.
This decision of President Abinader represents a decisive step in the recovery of the Dominican coasts in order to return to the locals and national and international tourists the enjoyment of the beautiful beaches of the country, so that the economic income generated by the tourism industry is reactivated and these natural resources are restored to the national patrimony.
