Roberto Álvarez president of the 53rd Session of the OAS General Assembly

Dominican Foreign Minister Roberto Álvarez was elected president of the 53rd Session of the General Assembly of the Organization of American States, and as of Thursday he will direct the work of this conclave in which 24 foreign ministers of the region have confirmed their participation.

“For the Dominican Republic, for the government of President Luis Abinader, and for me personally, it is an honor to preside over the fifty-third regular session of the General Assembly of the Organization of American States and warmly welcome you to this important conclave. We are honored to preside over the work of this meeting where we will discuss issues of vital importance to our region,” said the Dominican Foreign Minister after his election.

During his opening remarks, Foreign Minister Alvarez noted that “this space was designed for the exercise of frank and constructive dialogues, as we are called to face the complex common challenges that affect our societies and to seek solutions that promote sustainable development, peace and security”.

The Dominican diplomat said his country reaffirms its commitment to “strengthening a culture of democratic accountability with promotion, protection and equality of human rights in the Americas,” the theme of this session.

“This implies the commitment of each of us, as citizens and leaders, to foster active participation in public affairs, respecting the diversity of opinions and promoting human rights as the central axis of our policies, ensuring equal opportunities, social inclusion and respect for the dignity of each individual,” said Minister Roberto Alvarez as he augured a successful culmination of this hemispheric meeting.

The Dominican delegation to this event is completed by the Vice Minister of Multilateral Foreign Policy, Rubén Silié; the Permanent Representative of the Dominican Republic to the OAS, Josué Fiallo; the Dominican Ambassador to the United States, Sonia Guzmán, and the Alternate Ambassador to the OAS, Anabel Bueno, along with their teams.
