Punta Cana International Airport is the first air terminal in the RD to be certified as an Authorized Economic Operator (AEO) by the World Customs Organization (WCO).
AEO certification is a global accreditation granted to airports that approve compliance with measures related to security and good practices in the international supply chain of goods.
International airports are certified as economic operators when they meet the criteria for AEO status, “which is when they are considered reliable partners in the supply chain,” according to the WCO.
The WCO defines an Authorized Economic Operator “as the natural or legal person intervening in the international logistics chain that, after acceptance of the viability of the other regulatory authorities of foreign trade activities, has been certified by the General Directorate of Customs for guaranteeing safe and reliable trade operations, after compliance with established conditions and requirements”.
Punta Cana Airport was recognized for its Administrative Management, Economic Solvency, Security of Business Associates, Security of the container and other cargo units, as well as for Physical Security.
In addition, the recognition is awarded for having better access control, personnel security, process security, information technology security and security training and threat awareness.
The Authorized Economic Operator is an international program adopted by all member countries of the World Customs Organization at its general assembly in 2005, under the SAFE regulatory framework, with the objective of securing and facilitating international trade.
