The Dominican Republic, through the Ministry of Public Health (MSP), participated in the “Regional Forum to celebrate the launch of the Alliance for Primary Health Care in the Americas (AxAPS)”, held in Uruguay, to promote investment, innovation and the implementation of policies and initiatives aimed at transforming health systems in the region, focusing mainly on the Primary Health Care strategy.
The Regional Forum, developed by the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the World Bank (WB), together with the Government of Uruguay, included a review of good PHC practices in the region and the world, with the participation of experts linked to decision making and policy design, local government officials, health administrators, providers, researchers, academics, professional associations and civil society from the participating countries in the Americas.
On this occasion, the Minister of Public Health, Dr. Daniel Rivera, was represented by Dr. Eladio Pérez, Vice-Minister of Collective Health, and Dr. Eddy Pérez Then, special advisor of the institution, who had an active participation in the event which took place from the 4th to the 6th of this month.
In this regard, Deputy Minister Pérez participated in the panel “Essential public health functions as catalysts for the implementation of a PHC approach in the organization of health services”, where he shared the experience of the Dominican Republic on the evaluation of the renewed essential public health functions.
“Dominican Republic, in recent years has presented very significant changes around the essential public health functions, since thanks to the strategies of the government of Luis Abinader and our minister, Dr. Rivera, we have developed capacities at all levels, achieving the strengthening of health systems, with which we also guarantee a full exercise of the right to health, acting on risk factors and determinants”, said Dr. Eladio Perez.
Dr. Eddy Pérez Then, thanked and congratulated the organizations involved for the actions carried out in favor of the health systems in the region of the Americas.
Technical meeting of the Economic and Health Dialogue of the Americas (EHA)
The representatives also participated in the technical meeting on the “Economic and Health Dialogue of the Americas (EHA)”, coordinated by the Embassy and the Department of State of the United States of America. The EHA is made up of 18 countries of the Western Hemisphere, which share the common goal of establishing initiatives to foster the political will and commitments necessary to strengthen public health systems and protect the economies of the region.
PAHO CLAD Meeting
During their visit to Uruguay, Drs. Eladio Pérez and Eddy Pérez Then also held a meeting with representatives of the Latin American Center for Perinatology/Women’s and Reproductive Health (CLAP/SMR) of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), who offered technical cooperation for the promotion, strengthening and improvement of health care for women, mothers and newborns in the countries of the region.
The meeting was held at the Executive Tower of the Presidency of the Republic of Uruguay, where they took the opportunity to present strategies to optimize the country’s health system.
