Fundación Propagas and Fotoguardianes de la Naturaleza honored with the Special Achievement Award (SAG) at the GIS Award Conference
Esri, a global leader in location intelligence and provider of GIS (Geographic Information Systems) technology, presented the Special Achievement Award in GIS (SAG) to the Propagas Foundation and Photo Guardians of Nature on July 12 during the Esri User Conference (Esri UC) held in Redlands, California, United States.
Selected from hundreds of thousands of users, the Propagas Foundation and Photo Guardians of Nature received the award for their innovative use of mapping technology and their leadership in the area of environmental education. The SAG Award aims to recognize organizations around the world that use geographic information systems technology to educate, share information and solve complex problems.
“Users across industries continue to showcase the revolutionary possibilities of what GIS can help them achieve,” said Jack Dangermond, founder and president of Esri. “I am honored to recognize these organizations for the many ways they are taking a geographic approach to address some of the most pressing challenges facing our world today.”
Since 2020, the Propagas Foundation has been working together with the Photo Guardians of Nature on conservation education projects, with the aim of training people from various sectors and professional backgrounds on relevant environmental issues, united in the interest of promoting environmental protection, as well as encouraging ethical behavior among photographers and visitors to the natural spaces and Protected Areas of the Dominican Republic.
Their most recent joint project and the subject of this important award was ecosistemas.do, a platform entitled “The richness of our ecosystems”, which consists of a virtual guide to biodiversity in the Dominican Republic and describes its most representative ecosystems, main threats, as well as outstanding points of interest. The innovative portal ecosistemas.do, created on a virtual platform developed by the prestigious company Esri and represented locally by the company Geomática y Tecnología, was the result of the efforts of renowned environmentalists, biologists, journalists and conservation photographers: Yolanda León, Ricardo Briones, Marvin del Cid, Pedro Genaro, José Alejandro Álvarez, Fritz Pichardo, Guillermo Ricart, Leo Salazar and Eladio Fernández, under the coordination of Gibel Orsini and the general direction of Mayra Johnson.
