The pieces were displayed in the Museum of the Dominican Man
The United States Immigration Control and Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) services handed over a collection of Taino artifacts to Dominican authorities, which had been smuggled out of the country.
The pieces were displayed Thursday in a ceremony in the Museum of the Dominican Man, headed by Rafael Lantigua, the Dominican Culture minister and United States ambassador Raul Yzaguirre, among other officials.
We feel very committed to the fight against the pillaging of the cultural legacy and the fight against the illicit traffic of the cultural property and which, in one way or another robs the nations of their historical past. The artifacts we see here today are a testimony of this land’s rich cultural history
, Yzaguirre said.
The United States ambassador added that according to experts, some of the pieces date back to around 1,000 years.
