Estrellas close to final series by blanking Licey 1-0

A sacrifice fly by Webster Rivas in the eighth inning brought in the only run.

A sacrifice fly by Webster Rivas decided a close pitching duel in which the Estrellas Orientales came away with a 1-0 win over the Tigres del Licey to move closer to the Dominican winter baseball final series.

The Estrellas (10-4) move closer to winning this semifinal round robin round with four games remaining and are two games ahead of the Tigres (8-6), who are losing for the second night in a row.

Rivas hit a shot to left field to score Alfredo Reyes, in an inning in which reliever Jean Carlos Mejia struggled to put Licey under pressure with Leones del Escogido (6-8) two games out of the all-important second place.

After one out, Robinson Canó hit a double to right field and was replaced by Reyes. On a 0-1 count, Mejia threw a wild pitch and Reyes moved to third and then stepped on the plate with Rivas’ grounder.

Neftalí Féliz took care of the ninth for the Estrellas and retired all three batters he faced.

This is the third game that these two teams have decided a shutout victory, with the Estrellas taking two of the three games. It is also the sixth game of the round robin to be decided by shutout.

The game was won by Gerson Moreno (2-0; 0.00). Mejía (1-1; 1.00) lost and Féliz saved his third of this round.

The Estrellas fired 11 hits against five for Licey. Each team used six pitchers.

This Sunday, Licey faces Escogido at the Estadio Quisqueya Juan Marichal at 5:00 p.m. and the Estrellas travel to San Francisco to play the Gigantes del Cibao at the Estadio Julian Javier.
