DR on its way to becoming the Caribbean’s largest tourism powerhouse

With the renovation works, the recovery of tourist areas, beaches and the projects that continue to be built, the RD is on its way to becoming a major tourist power in the Caribbean, reaffirmed yesterday the Dominican Minister of Tourism, David Collado.

He said that the sector, which for years has been a fundamental engine for the DR economy, is already a reference of tourism recovery, due to the right decisions taken in the midst of the covid-19 pandemic and which has earned worldwide recognition, but now, he said, it is necessary to go for more.

He pointed out that the projects of Cabo Rojo, in Pedernales, the US$90 million investment in the Colonial City of Santo Domingo, and Punta Bergantín in Puerto Plata, visualize where the DR is going in terms of tourism.

“We have not remained static, we have continued to advance. In Miches we have a tourism project with 1,500 rooms, in addition to the aforementioned projects,” said Collado while presenting to Colombian tourism sector businessmen all the attractions that the different tourism poles of the RD have in a roadshow, in the celebration of the 43rd Vitrina Turística fair organized by the Colombian Association of Travel Agencies (Anato).

He assured that the country is betting on a more sustainable tourism, to diversify the offer and improve connectivity, as these are points to become a tourist power.

He recalled that the arrival of more than 10 million tourists last year is the result of the efforts of all Dominicans.

For his part, the president of the Association of Hotels and Tourism of the DR (Asonahores), David Llibre, said that promoting the DR at Anato is very important, because Colombia’s growth has led it to become the third country of origin of tourists to the Caribbean island.
