Frontier Airlines announced two new nonstop routes from San Juan to the RD and Barbados, which will begin on June 14 and July 3, respectively.
From Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in Carolina, the flight to the DR will land at Cibao International Airport, located in the city of Santiago, while the route to Barbados will arrive at Grantley Adams International Airport, located in the town of Seawell.
“We are delighted to add these routes to our rapidly expanding operations from San Juan, which will be supported by the opening of our new crew base in San Juan in June,” said Josh Flyr, vice president of network design and operations for Frontier Airlines.
He explained that both routes will begin with three weekly frequencies, with an introductory fare starting at US$59.
“We are excited about the expansion of Frontier’s service at SJU and will continue to work together to increase Puerto Rico’s connectivity in the region,” said Jorge Hernández, president and CEO of Aerostar Airport Holdings, the company that manages Luis Muñoz Marín Airport.
Puerto Rico as an aviation center
Meanwhile, for the executive director of the Puerto Rico Tourism Company, Carlos Mercado Santiago, he said the route represents one more step to “strengthen Puerto Rico as the leading aviation hub in the Caribbean.”
“We are delighted to see Frontier’s new base in San Juan grow with the addition of two new routes between San Juan and Santiago de los Caballeros and Barbados. We are happy to support Frontier’s continued rapid growth on the island,” he said.
In addition, next June, Frontier will open a new crew base at Luis Muñoz Marín Airport, which will generate more than $80 million annually in local wages. During the first year of operation, the airline plans to employ 90 pilots and 200 flight attendants, in addition to the employees it will have to work at the airport and in the maintenance of its planes.
