Punta Cana airport projects record passenger traffic for summer

The Punta Cana airport, the main gateway for tourism in the country, maintains high expectations for the summer, especially from the US market, as explained Alberto Smith, director of Landside Operations of the terminal, as July promises to be the all-time record month at the airport.

“The expectations we have is to receive in July almost over one million passengers and if everything continues as it is going, with the reports and airline bookings, the summer will be successful,” he added.

He detailed to arecoa.com that the terminal is with 2023 average data at 11% growth versus 2022. “We expect this summer 2023 to be a record summer in every sense of the word, of flights and passengers and with a view to that we are finishing the expansion of Terminal B.”

“After the negative publicity in the American market in 2019 that cost us almost half a million passengers, and 2018 being the best year ever, we are already surpassing it by far and already the American market is almost 20% above 2018, so we conclude that the negative effect of that publicity has been diluted over time,” he stressed.

Regarding the increase in operations to the airport and the addition of new airlines, Smith said they are looking for new markets and new routes, both from Europe and the Middle East.

“There are some conversations that are being held with some airlines, and we will also be participating in several fairs this year looking for new markets and new routes from both Europe and the Middle East, although nothing concrete is in place, but the conversations are very advanced,” he stressed.

He said that there are also Dominican airlines interested in creating connections from the terminal with a view to materialize in the short term.
