Embassy of Switzerland celebrates its National Day in the DR

The Embassy of Switzerland in the Dominican Republic celebrated last Monday, August 1, the 731st anniversary of the Swiss Confederation, an activity attended by local authorities, members of the diplomatic corps and representatives of the Swiss Club and the Swiss-Dominican Chamber of Commerce and Tourism.

Rita Hämmerli-Weschke, Swiss ambassador in the Caribbean country, commented that the year 2022 has been marked by several important bilateral events, such as the visit of Dominican President Luis Abinader to the World Economic Forum in Davos in June and to the World Health Organization (WHO) in Geneva.

Hämmerli-Weschke noted that Geneva is the headquarters of the International Committee of the Red Cross, co-founded by Swiss citizen Henry Dunant.

“The principles of humanity, impartiality, neutrality and independence are reflected in international humanitarian law and even in the Geneva Conventions. The celebration of the Swiss National Day takes place every August 1st. In 2022, the Swiss Confederation celebrates 731 years since the time of the federal pact of alliance between the three cantons of Uri, Schwyz and Unterwalden.

This celebration is supported by the Swiss companies Nestlé, Schad Logistics SICPA, SIKA and Roche. The celebration also served for Switzerland to further promote the “harmonious” relations that exist between the two nations.

Bilateral relations

The diplomat highlighted that bilateral relations between the Dominican Republic and Switzerland continue to be “dynamic, efficient and encouraging, under the impulse of a regenerated government”.

“The fact that the Swiss love the Dominican Republic is also reflected in the increasing number of Swiss tourists coming to the Dominican Republic. In 2021, there were 66,000 arrivals,” the press release stated.
