The Art and Culture for Development Foundation will celebrate the fourth edition of the African and Diaspora Film Festival, a cultural event that seeks to promote diversity and inclusion in the film industry.
This festival will take place from April 17 to 30 in San Jose, Limon and Guanacaste, with film screenings, conferences, talks at the U Latina, concerts and other cultural activities in celebration of the talent of the African Diaspora throughout the country. In addition, there will be additional screenings at the Centro de Cine from May 10 to 12.
This festival will feature renowned guests in the film industry such as Kasi Lemmons (director of “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” and “Harriet, Road to Freedom”), Gina Prince-Bythewood (director of “The King Woman” and “Beyond The Lights”), Shaka King (director and co-writer of “Judas and the Black Messiah”), Darrell Britt-Gibson (actor of “Judas and the Black Messiah”) and Iván Herrera (director of “Bantú Mama”), who will participate in talks and conferences during the festival. The Dominican films Liborio (2021) by Nino Martínez Sosa and Perejil (2022) by José María Cabral will also be part of the screenings.
Film screenings will take place at all Cinépolis venues in the country, CitiCinemas, Plaza Moín, Instituto Tecnológico Sede Caribe and G&E Chocolate Adventure Company in Limón and the Guanacaste Museum in Liberia.
“The opportunities we see from a film festival like this one is that the population can see themselves represented in the films we are bringing. To be able to bring this festival with narratives where different themes are touched upon is a new way to talk about Afro-descendant stories,” commented Carol Britton, director of the Art and Culture for Development Foundation.
The African and Diaspora Film Festival was born out of the Flores Festival of the African Diaspora, which has been celebrated since 1999 in the month of August, and which was declared of national interest by the Costa Rican government in 2018.
This festival is carried out with the support of the Ministry of Culture, Cadena Mayor, Cinépolis, Comunidad Audiovisual DeleFOCO, Solva Studio and Producciones Papalote, as well as state universities, Universidad Latina, Universidad Véritas, the municipalities of Liberia and Limón, and the Pastoral Juvenil Iglesia Católica de Limón.
