Abinader stresses importance of port activity in economic recovery

President Luis Abinader highlighted on Wednesday the importance of the port sector in the economic recovery that the country is experiencing, as well as the opportunity it offers for training, professionalism and competitive economy so demanded in the 21st century.

“If we are able to detect our opportunities well and get involved with training and efficiency, we will be able to leave a key sector for the sustainability of our future economy,” said the head of state, according to a press release from the Presidency.

While participating in the First Virtual Forum on Port Law in the Dominican Republic, organized by the Dominican Port Authority (Apordom) and the Association of Shipping Companies of the Dominican Republic (ANRD), the president stressed that the country is located in a strategic point in the Caribbean and that efforts are being made to turn it into a logistics HUB.

He also said that the country’s port system contemplates strategic locations that are deployed from end to end, in a route that is located from Santo Domingo, Manzanillo, La Romana, Boca Chica, Samaná, Pedernales, San Pedro de Macorís or from Barahona, among others.

He said that from all points, from north to south, or from east to west, in the Dominican territory there is a port with its own characteristics capable of generating wealth for the country.

“And that is why this forum, to detect, collaborate and enhance coordination among all stakeholders, adapt to current needs and get the most out of it,” he said.

The president considered that this forum is an excellent scenario to identify the latent and most urgent needs of this economic section, in order to train those who daily intervene in these operations and be able to be more competitive.

He recalled that approximately 90% of world trade is mobilized by ships.

“If we want this recovery to be sustained over time and generate the long-term benefits we desire, we need to implement the precise reforms that adapt the framework to the changing global context,” he added.

President Abinader hoped that these meetings to be held in the coming days would generate productive work, with reflections, proposals and solutions on such a complex issue, but one that is equally important for the commercial activity of any country.

He expressed that he will be very attentive to the reflections of this forum to apply whatever is necessary to strengthen this economic sector.

“They have the support of the government to listen to them and to collaborate in all that is necessary”, he added.
