With an investment of more than 20 million pesos, the Salt Storage Center for the Commercialization of Salt of the Montecristi Salt Producers’ Cooperative was inaugurated in this province, as the first phase of the industrialization of this important product.
The work, built with the financing of the Special Fund for Agricultural Development (FEDA), will allow the beginning of the commercialization, guaranteeing the immediate generation of income to the more than 300 members of the Cooperative of Salineros.
During the event, Hecmilio Galván, executive director of FEDA, announced a second stage for the cooperative, which includes the refining of salt, including the creation of a management and administrative body, the acquisition of machinery and equipment, and the creation of a collective brand of El Morro salt.
The work was received by the president of the Management Committee, Miguel Ángel Maito Zabala and José Agustín Jerez, president of the Producers’ Cooperative, who thanked President Luis Abinader and FEDA for the construction of the storage center.
Montecristi province is the largest salt producer of the five provinces in the country that produce the mineral, producing between 1.5 and 2 million quintals.
The management and organization will be coordinated and supervised by a committee integrated by the Cooperative of Salt Producers, the Association of Independent Salt Producers, the Chamber of Commerce and Production of Montecristi and local authorities.
This and other works carried out by the government of President Luis Abinader, reaffirms the firm commitment to develop the border communities, forgotten by previous governments.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by salt producers, deputy directors and officials of the Special Fund for Agricultural Development and local authorities.
