President Luis Abinader inaugurated this Saturday the refurbished National and Archaeological Park of La Isabela Histórica, in the municipality of Luperón, which will have an impact on tourism in the province of Puerto Plata.
The president emphasized that where this historical museum is being readapted was the first settlement by the Spaniards and later the city of Santo Domingo de Guzmán was founded, highlighting the historical, cultural and tourist significance of the area.
He said that the museum is ideal for master’s, postgraduate and doctorate studies in history. He also said that he will talk with some universities to help in the promotion of the museum, from the tourist point of view.
He urged the community of the area to create a volunteer program to preserve the work, as well as the preparation of tourist guides.
The renovation of the work had an investment of more than 170 million pesos and the electrical and sanitary installations were restored, as well as the bathrooms and the canalization of the project’s intervention area.
The work will have an impact on the more than 20,000 inhabitants of Luperon, as it will boost the local economy, with the creation of jobs and new small businesses or community businesses, and will also help to promote culture, education, and encourage investment in the community.
President Abinader’s government invests in culture
The Minister of Culture, Milagros Germán, emphasized that the government headed by President Abinader invests in culture, in the rescue of the history that allows to build every day our identity and the pride of being Dominicans.
Germán indicated that La Isabela National Archaeological Park is the first settlement of the new world, founded more than 530 years ago and proposed for the indicative list of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco) as a world heritage site.
“This wonderful space, a symbol of our culture, is already among the routes offered to cruise passengers and we are beginning to feel the presence of international tourism and the welfare that this offers and will offer to the residents of La Isabela,” said Germán.
Meanwhile, the president of the Presidential Commission for the Support of Provincial Development, Ángel De la Cruz, highlighted the high historical significance of this park, since it houses the remains of the first village founded by Europeans in the American continent.
De la Cruz pointed out that it was in this place where the colonizers celebrated the first mass in the temple Las Américas, in 1494 and where the first cultural exchange between Spaniards and indigenous people of the island took place and highlighted the level of dedication, vision and consistency, of dedication to the work that President Abinader has applied from the Presidential Palace, of the national budget in a horizontal way, throughout the national territory.
Present at the activities were the Administrative Minister of the Presidency, José Ignacio Paliza; the governor of Puerto Plata, Claritza Rochette; the senator, Ginette Bournigal; the mayor, Roquelito García; the president of the Dominican Basketball Federation, Rafael Uribe; the deputies, Emil Durán and Johnny Medina.
