American Airlines makes history with its first direct flight to Samaná

The route that will operate from June 5, 2021, will have a frequency of two flights per week from Charlotte / El Catey – El Catey / Charlotte, which will carry a maximum of 76 passengers per flight, in an Embraer aircraft.

“Little by little, the Dominican Republic is regaining its leadership as a tourist destination in the Caribbean; and one way of explaining the reactivation of the aeronautical sector is the approval of the new Samaná / Charlotte route, to be operated by American Airlines and other new routes,” explained Marte Piantini, president of the JAC.

According to the Civil Aviation Board, U.S. airlines Frontier, Spirit and American Airlines requested to extend their air operations permits to include new routes and increased frequencies on other existing routes.

“In detail, Frontier Airlines, requested the amendment of its Operating Permit No. 88, to add the route Miami / Punta Cana / Miami, with capacity for 186 passengers; with two frequencies a week: Monday and Friday, which will start operating from March, 2021,” they explained in a statement.

Spirit Airlines also requested the amendment of its operating permit No. 48, to include the Orlando / Punta Cana / Orlando route, with capacity for 182 seats; with three frequencies per week, which will begin operating on February 4, 2021.

On the other hand, American Airlines requested the inclusion of the route Philadelphia / Santiago / Philadelphia, to be added to its operating permit No. 3, which will operate three times a week, starting on February 2, 2021. The route will be served by a Boing 737 and Airbus A-320 with capacity for 172 and 150 seats, respectively.

The Board is also integrated by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Minister of Tourism, the legal advisor of the Executive Power, the general director of the Dominican Institute of Civil Aviation (IDAC).

The executive director of the Airport Department; the general commander of the Air Force (FARD); the general director of the Specialized Corps for Airport and Civil Aviation Security (CESAC); as representatives of the private sector, Nasim Antonio Yapor Alba and Andrés R. Marranzini Grullón and Pablo Lister, current secretary of the JAC are also part of the Board.

The Civil Aviation Board (JAC) is the highest body in civil aviation matters and meets every 15 days to dictate measures and legislation on air traffic in the country, as established by Law 491-06 of Civil Aviation of the Dominican Republic.
