The Dominican Republic will host the XII Annual Conference of Mining Ministries of the Americas (CAMMA) to be held in Santo Domingo from October 18 to 20, with representatives from 23 governments of the region exchanging knowledge and experiences in public mining management.
This international conclave -considered the most important in the mining sector in the Americas- seeks to highlight mining as a key vector for the integral development of the States.
It will be headed by Vice President Raquel Peña and the Minister of Energy and Mines, Antonio Almonte.
During the working sessions, the main focus of this multilateral mining policy forum will be on sustainable mining and the search for mechanisms to facilitate inter-institutional communication among the sector’s stakeholders.
CAMMA is a space for improving the governance of mineral resources, strengthening eco-sustainable commitments and highlighting the contribution of mining to the achievement of the so-called “Millennium Development Goals”.
In addition, the event will feature interesting panels that will be chaired by Miguel Díaz, vice minister of Mines; Rolando Muñoz, director of Mining; Miguel Peña, mining advisor to the Executive Branch and Edwin García, director of the National Geological Service. There will be two types of attendance: in person -at the Sheraton Hotel in Santo Domingo- and in virtual format.
Conference program
The event will begin at 8:45 a.m. on Tuesday, October 18, with opening speeches by Vice President Raquel Peña and Minister Antonio Almonte. They will address the value of the national extractive industry in terms of employability, stability of public finances, foreign exchange generation, technology transfer and social responsibility.
Afterwards, consultant Armand Peschard-Sverdrup, with a degree in Political Science and Economics from Carleton University and postgraduate studies at the School of International Affairs of Georgetown University, will speak on “Mining and governance of mineral resources in the development of Latin America”.
Other authorities will also speak at the XII CAMMA Conference, including: Víctor Bisonó Haza, Minister of Industry and Commerce; Cristine Laberge, Canadian ambassador; Mark Bristow, president of Barrick Gold; Juana Barceló, president of Barrick Pueblo Viejo; Rafael Poveda, consultant for the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC); Elizabeth Mena, president of the Dominican Association of Exporters (Adoexpo) and executive vice-president of Cormidom; Adan Olivares, from the Initiative for the Assurance of Responsible Mining, and Pierre Pasquale, from the Institute for the Governance of National Resources.
Also scheduled to participate are: Todd Burns, president of Cypher Environmetal; Jeff Simpson, of Aquatic Life; James Lauer, director of the Extractive Sector and Natural Resources Canada’s Extractive Sector Transparency and Taxation Division; consultant and geologist Osiris de León; Marcos Pérez, president of the Dominican Mining Institute; Vicente Gabaldón, of the ASGMI General Secretariat; Julissa Báez, from the Dominican Association of Cement Producers (ADOCEM); Jeannette Sánchez, from ECLAC’s Natural Resources and Infrastructure Division; Freddy Cáceres, manager of the Extractive Resources Governance Program of the University of Calgary, Canada; Gabriel Castillo, director of Climate Change; Yomaira Martinó Soto, from GreEnergy Dominicana, and Gamal Michelén, vice-minister of Culture.
The meeting will be concluded by the Minister of the Presidency, Joel Santos, and on October 20, the panelists will have the opportunity to visit two mining companies of reference in the country.
