Tourism Development: Agreement on solid waste management

The Pro-Pedernales and Do Sostenible trusts together with the General Directorate of Public-Private Partnerships (DGAPP) established a collaboration agreement that contemplates the closure of the Pedernales and Monte Boutique landfills in the Jaragua National Park with the objective of implementing an integrated waste management process for the Cabo Rojo project, an action that will have a favorable impact on the entire province.

By means of the agreement, the trusts committed to work jointly in the integral management of solid waste within the Cabo Rojo-Pedernales Project and to promote the construction of an emergency cell in the Pedernales landfill and the management of a sanitary landfill for the municipality of the province and its surrounding areas.Acuerdo Gestión de Residuos Sólidos

The framework agreement was signed by the general manager of Fiduciaria Reservas, Andrés Vander Horst Álvarez, as trustee manager of the trusts, by the executive director of the Do-Sostenible Trust, Armando Paino Henríquez, and by the executive director of the DGAPP, Sigmund Freund, the trustor of the Pro-Pedernales Trust.

Freund thanked both the general manager of Fiduciaria Reservas and the executive director of Do-Sostenible for their willingness to support the efforts being made to implement best practices in the Cabo Rojo project and highlighted the role played by Fiduciaria Reservas, in the person of its general manager, which he said “has been a great ally of the development of Pedernales, a support that goes beyond its responsibility as a fiduciary agent”.

He emphasized that the signing is especially significant, since the Do-Sostenible Trust is the first public-private alliance trust created in the country and its good performance is an example that these sectors can work together to achieve objectives for the improvement of the environment and the health of the population.

Freund promised that, with the support of President Luis Abinader and Grupo Reservas, they will do everything possible to achieve the closure of these landfills which are doing so much damage to Pedernales, a province which he said will begin to receive thousands of cruise ship passengers in January. He added that, with this agreement, the steps to guarantee an adequate management of solid waste and the sustainable development of the Enriquillo Region are initiated.

In his words, Vander Horst said that “this agreement commits us even more to the execution of a project that will serve as a reference to other tourist destinations for the care and commitment to the proper management of their environment and solid waste”.

Paino Henríquez congratulated the executive director of the DGAPP, Sigmund Freund, for being aware of the importance of the environment by initiating the construction of the “next destination of the Dominican Republic”. He emphasized that “this is the first time that (a tourist destination) is being built in a planned, studied manner and taking into consideration the environment and sustainability”, which he said will be the great legacy of President Luis Abinader.

He added that until almost four months ago in this province there was no type of integral management of solid waste and pointed out that for this reason this agreement has greater significance “because the works are still beginning and there is already a plan for the management of solid waste”.
