Alexa Torres is a Dominican who has triumphed in the world of classical dance because of her great talent. The fact that she has recently been accepted into the Paris Opera, becoming the first Dominican to join this prestigious company, is already a great endorsement that fills her country with pride.
Alexa was the surprise of the night at the 15th edition of the World Dance Stars Charity Gala at the Eduardo Brito National Theater last Saturday night.
To reach the current levels of perfection she has spent an extensive time on stage.
At only 4 years old Alexa fell in love with dance and had her first performance with the Ballet Clásico de Santiago, the same city where she began her studies under the tutelage of Norma García.
ADRENALINA
In an interview with Listín Diario, she recalled how in one of her first presentations when she went on stage she felt an adrenaline and euphoria that propelled her and she realized that ballet was her thing.
“I became obsessed and wanted to continue feeling that beautiful sensation, that pushed me to continue my career, the truth,” the dancer added to Listín Diario.
At the age of 14, when she finished her studies at the Ballet Clásico de Santiago she went to continue her studies in another country, because at that time in her country studying ballet was not so advanced.
“My teacher and I knew that at that time there was no possibility for me to have a career as a professional dancer in the Dominican Republic,” she said. She received a ballet scholarship to the prestigious Russian teaching school, Kirov Academy of Ballet, in Washington, DC, USA.
At that same center of studies she was awarded the 2016 Kennedy Center National Society of Arts and Letters Award for Excellence.
The main support she has had is her mother, “the best mom in the world”. The young woman added that from a very early age she was unconditional in supporting her desire to be a dancer.
“She always told me that I could do whatever I wanted to do and that nothing would limit me,” she said about her mother’s constant encouragement.
Then she added: “Her voice and her words always went hand in hand with me and that always helped me”. Likewise, her family members supported her and she feels very fortunate.
Alexa explained that a lot of work has been done in the country to raise the Dominican flag with classical dance, but she believes that efforts are still lacking.
“There are still limitations and that more support can be given. Most Dominicans don’t know about classical dance,” she said.
She maintains the hope that someday dance will stand out even more in the country, because for her, over the years the progress has been good and has had good progress, but “somehow it should be supported more”.
For Alexa Torres dance is not easy, so she advised those who dream of pursuing this career to focus on the goal and make the public happy, enjoying the process.
“One must have big dreams and not let fear stop us, because we are all afraid,” the Dominican dancer said at the end.
