Ferry between PR and the DR: investment of US$100 million

Jean Luis Rodríguez, executive director of the Dominican Port Authority (Apordom), celebrated the start of construction work at the ports of Mayagüez and San Pedro de Macorís, since the Spanish ferry company Balearia will now operate the maritime route between the two docks.

This initiative will create new investment infrastructures and improve the conditions of the existing ports. It is expected to begin after the summer and has an investment of US$100 million dollars, to offer a combined transport of passengers, vehicles and merchandise, with daily and reliable communications.

For his part, Juan Adolfo Utor Martínez, president of Balearia, said the new service represents a key driver for the progress, socioeconomic development and connectivity of both countries, as Balearia’s experience of more than a decade in the routes it operates between the United States and the Bahamas.

The transformation of the port of San Pedro de Macoris, consists of the construction of a new multifunctional passenger terminal in the port of San Pedro de Macoris and in the adaptation of more than 100,000 square meters of these facilities in the Port of Mayaguez.

Among its facilities are important advances in technology; it will promote the mobility of passengers and merchandise between the Antilles; access to European markets and boost tourism and trade.

In that sense, Mayagüez and San Pedro de Macorís, with a trip of 133 nautical miles and a duration of six hours, will have the capacity to transport approximately 1000 passengers, 350 vehicles and 300 containers to Dominican soil.
