The Puerto Plata Amber Museum, located in the heart of the city in a neoclassical-style residence, displays impressive amber stones from the Dominican Republic on several floors, some of which contain animal fossils. Displayed in a cave-like room, you’ll see close-ups of stones containing a nearly 43-centimeter lizard, a scorpion, a centipede, wasp nests and two mating beetles, all dating back 15-20 million years. There are also amber stones with butterflies and flowers. An amber gemstone containing a mosquito was used in Steven Spielberg’s movie, Jurassic Park.
