Continuing with his commitment to bring well-being, justice, security and progress to thousands of families throughout the country, President Luis Abinader inaugurated this Saturday seven drinking water and sanitation works, which will impact the lives of some 135,000 people, and delivered 250 apartments to displaced people from the Gurabo ravine.
The President also inaugurated the new Center for the Integral Development of Women (CEDI-Mujer), La Otra Banda sector; the renovation of the Santiago School of Fine Arts; a National Police station and a church in Hato del Yaque.
Drinking water and sanitation works
The drinking water works were executed by the Santiago Aqueduct and Sewage Corporation (Coraasan), directed by Andrés Burgos, at a cost of 878 million pesos, and include the La Zurza storage tank, with a capacity of two million gallons of water, which will benefit the residents of the historic center of the city, Baracoa, Pueblo Nuevo, Las Carreras, El Retiro, El Ensueño, Nibaje, El Congo and surrounding areas.
Likewise, in the municipality of Tamboril, Coraasan rehabilitated the drinking water storage tank, with a capacity of three million gallons, which will benefit the center of the city of the referred municipality and the localities Los Peralta, Los Rieles street, Canca La Piedra, Valentín neighborhood, Carlos Díaz, Polanco, Haina, El Caño, El Calientísimo, residencial Don Francisco, among others.
Meanwhile, in the Santiago Oeste municipal district, several projects were executed which include a pipeline from the Mella I tank to the Cienfuegos canal and a distribution network that will supply ten of the eighteen sectors that make up the Mirador Sur widening and replaced, in Bella Vista, the 30-inch impulsion line, which starts on the banks of the Yaque del Norte river, crossing Fernando Bermudez street to Emilio Prud’ Homme avenue.
In the area of sanitation, Coraasan delivered the collector of the urbanization Villas del Norte stage II, a work contemplated in the agreement of the Presidency of the Republic – Compromiso Santiago, and also, a collector was installed in the street Sergio Hernández with 30 Caballeros, whose solution includes a drainage of the waters generated by the residents in the center of Cienfuegos, Alegría neighborhood, part of the neighborhoods San Fernando and Ensanche Mella I, El Semillero I, II and III, and José Manuel neighborhood, among others.
Inauguration and delivery of 250 apartments, in Hato del Yaque
Then, President Abinader delivered 250 new apartments in the Plan Mi Vivienda Hato del Yaque, which benefits an equal number of families who now become owners, which exceeds the 8,500 housing units delivered by the Ministry of Housing and Buildings, through the Plan Mi Vivienda, in several districts of the national territory.
Mi Vivienda Hato del Yaque has an investment of RD2,796 million, benefiting more than 4,000 people who lived in vulnerable conditions on the banks of ravines and rivers of the Gurabo stream. The project creates more than 2,500 direct jobs, is divided into 3 lots, and includes some 150 buildings comprising 1,200 apartments with three bedrooms, one bathroom, living-dining room, kitchen and balcony.
The current senator of Santiago, Eduardo Estrella, explained that this project, originally contemplated with 1,200 apartments, will continue with 1,200 more. “All of these actions are a sign that this government is getting the chelitos.”
He added that as President Abinader continues to focus on doing the works that the communities need, it is planned to bring a feeder line of buses that will allow a connection with the Cable Car and the Monorail of Santiago, once completed.
On his side, the Minister of Housing, Carlos Bonilla, said that this is a day of celebration and hope in Santiago de los Caballeros, where 250 apartments of the Plan Mi Vivienda Hato del Yaque are delivered. “And this means a lot to us because we reached a total of 1,140 owners and 95% of the work delivered”.
The President symbolically handed over one of the apartments to the new beneficiary Nilda Mercedes Rodriguez, who emotionally thanked the head of state for her new home.
Delivery of a detachment in Hato del Yaque and a church
In the same act, a National Police station was also delivered in Hato del Yaque, providing citizen security to the housing project and the surrounding areas. It has a cell for men and another for women, kitchen, dormitories, guard house, offices, weapons department and all the basic services and equipment necessary for its operation.
President Abinader also delivered the church of Hato del Yaque, at the request of the community of this municipal district. This has an extension of 170 square meters, with a capacity for 70 people, has all the required facilities, as well as bathrooms and green areas.
Inauguration of CEDI-Mujer, La Otra Banda sector
Earlier in the day, the head of state inaugurated the new CEDI-Mujer, La Otra Banda sector, an initiative financed by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the result of a joint effort of the Social Policy Cabinet and 12 State institutions, aimed at transforming the lives of Dominican women in vulnerable conditions.
At the ceremony, the coordinator of the Social Policy Cabinet, Tony Peña, indicated that this center and the one to be inaugurated soon, which required an investment of USD 20 million for its construction and equipment, is a testimony of the commitment assumed by President Abinader to improve the quality of life of Dominican women, through the social protection institution he heads.
The director of the CEDI-Women Project of the Cabinet of Social Policies of the Presidency, Ana Lendor, and the Minister of Women’s Affairs, Mayra Jiménez, also intervened and highlighted President Abinader’s support to Dominican women so that they can redefine their future and the important advances achieved by this government in terms of rights, equity and gender equality.
Inauguration of the remodeled School of Fine Arts of Santiago
In the morning, President Abinader led the inaugural ceremony of the School of Fine Arts of Santiago (EBAS), after a remodeling process started in June 2022, with the purpose of adapting the space to promote artistic education in the province of Cibao.
The refurbishment works executed by the Ministry of Culture had an investment of more than RD 30 million and included the rehabilitation of classrooms, dance and theater rooms, and other areas of the entity. The school has an enrollment of 508 students, distributed in the disciplines of dance, theater, visual arts and music, and for the new school term 100 new students will enter.
The Minister of Culture, Milagros German, and the General Director of Fine Arts, Marinela Sallent, emphasized that the delivery of this school of Fine Arts, completely restored in its physical plant, ratifies the government’s commitment to the promotion of cultural democratization throughout the national territory.
Present at the activities were the Minister of Public Health, Victor Atallah; the governor of Santiago, Rosa Santos; the mayor Ulises Rodriguez; the senator-elect, Daniel Rivera; the Cultural advisor of the Executive Branch, Amaury Sanchez; the general manager of Edenorte, Andres Cueto.
