The Vice President of the Republic, Raquel Peña, pointed out this Friday that under the administration of President Luis Abinader, there has been an increase in investment destined for policies of equality and the fight against all types of violence against women, affirming that Dominican women “are no longer alone.”
“Today, we must reaffirm with conviction that the echo of Dominican women’s loneliness that once resounded in silence has been replaced by a chorus of solidarity and hope. Dominican women no longer face their journey in solitary darkness”, argued Peña during her participation in the commemorative act for the 25th anniversary of the Ministry of Women’s Affairs.
The Vice-Minister explained that policies, plans and programs aimed at achieving equity and the full exercise of citizenship by women have been implemented and that, although the road has been challenging, the progress has been remarkable.
In this regard, she highlighted the implementation of gender budget classifiers, which has allowed for greater visibility and efficiency in the allocation of resources, with more than US$280 million invested in areas such as access to justice, women’s economic autonomy, and sexual and reproductive health.
She also referred to the “Mujeres Súper Emprendedoras” initiative, implemented by the Supérate program, a testimony that, with the right support, it is possible to transform lives, reduce poverty and open doors towards a more dignified future; the transfer of the remains of Abigaíl Mejía to the Pantheon of the Homeland in September 2023, to begin to settle a historical debt with the Dominican suffragettes who fought for the democratic right of women; as well as other projects with which a more equitable and prosperous Dominican Republic is being built.
On the other hand, the Vice President highlighted the role of the Ministry of Women in transforming realities, impacting the lives of thousands of women throughout the country and strengthening the government’s commitment to equality.
Before concluding her remarks, Raquel Peña invited to join wills to continue building a future where every woman feels the certainty that her voice and aspirations are heard and that she is advancing towards a horizon of equality and shared prosperity.
Commemorative ceremony
During the ceremony, which took place at the Sansouci Port, the Minister of Women’s Affairs, Mayra Jiménez, said that the creation of this institution marked a turning point for the advancement of women and the work of mainstreaming equality in all public policies, as the most suitable route to break inequalities and expand opportunities in the different sectors of society, as a purpose of responsibility and commitment of the State at the highest level.
In the framework of this anniversary, some of the main advances in terms of guaranteeing women’s rights were highlighted, such as the establishment of 106 Gender Equality Units in public institutions.
Likewise, in terms of government social policies, such as housing, conditional cash transfers, land titling, public financing for MSMEs, scholarship programs, among others, now contemplate an equity approach, with women being the biggest beneficiaries.
