Ecuador president arrived to Dominican Republic

He’s willing to help renegotiate contracts with multinational companies

Ecuador president Rafael Correa on Sunday said his Government would help renegotiate contracts with multinational companies, when reporters asked about the Dominican government’s talks with Barrick Gold Corp. aimed at renegotiating the agreement for the mine at Pueblo Viejo.

The Ecuadorian president arrived in the country at Las Americas Airport yesterday to attend tonight’s opening of the 16th annual Santo Domingo International Book Fair.

Correa said he will discuss the issue in a meeting with president Danilo Medina today and would share Ecuador’s similar experiences with oil companies.

“This is a delicate thing that has to do with the country’s internal affairs. It’s also a global issue, especially in developing countries, regarding the abuses of transnational corporations and how they extract natural resources”, he said.
