SD hotel plant expands: will add 1,500 new rooms by 2024

The city of Santo Domingo is experiencing a boom with the growth of the tourism sector and this year will have 1,500 new hotel rooms, which will increase the offer offered to tourists.

The new hotels are the Marriot, Courtyard Piantini, Hyatt Centric, Kimpton Las Mercedes and the fifth would be a hotel chain from the United States, whose name cannot yet be revealed, explained Mónika Infante, president of the Santo Domingo Tourism Cluster (CTSD).

Infante estimates that the tourism sector will continue to grow in Santo Domingo, as it will soon have a large convention and events center.

Synergy with airports

The also general director of Aeropuertos Dominicanos Siglo XXI (Aerodom), expressed that there is a great synergy between the public and private sectors and the Las Americas International Airport (AILA).

“Building a second terminal with an investment of US$250 million, which would be ready in the summer of 2025 and will take 36 months to be ready. They are currently working on the soil studies, the design of the new terminal and preparing a demolition that will take place this year,” he said.

He emphasized that this year they will continue remodeling the airport, continuing the work they did last year, which will allow them to accommodate the new traffic. They are working on a new baggage handling system, an enlarged parking lot, the arrival area for check in, and the airfield, which should be ready in December. These investments amount to US$ 16 million.

He explained that this expansion will allow to receive 11 or 12 million passengers, doubling the current capacity of 5.5 million passengers by 2023, according to El Hoy.
