Camacho highlighted DR’s rising performance at Paris 2024

After a brilliant performance by Dominican athletes at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, the Dominican Republic finished the event with two bronze medals and one gold medal, the third places were won by boxers Yunior Alcántara and Cristian Pinales.

The gold medal was claimed by Dominican sprinter Marileidy Paulino, who excelled in the women’s 400 meters.

On the program Despierta con CDN, Miguel Camacho, head of mission of the Dominican national team that traveled to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, talked in more detail about the national results obtained in this Olympic participation.

Why is an Olympic medal so important?

Olympic medals are very few and it is difficult to win them,” said Camacho.

The simple fact that an athlete qualifies to participate in the Olympic Games is already a great merit for any country.

The head of the Dominican Olympic mission said that it is necessary to be optimistic and see the glass half full because in comparative terms with the references in the region, as is the case of Cuba, which has been a world reference in the sport, we qualified almost the same number of athletes, a total of 57 compared to 63 by Cuba, which only represents a number of six athletes.

Although many people may think that three medals do not represent much, we are talking about the largest athletic competition in the world in which not all countries get a place on the podium.

Camacho emphasized that this is the second time that the Dominican Republic is above countries such as Mexico, which is one of the largest economies in Latin America, in the medal standings.

Parts that influence the winning of medals

Parts that are part of the process to obtain an Olympic medal are the coaches, sports federations and the government of a country.

There is the athlete who is the fundamental part, but we must also recognize the coaches, the federations, because without the federations, little can be done with the rest”.

In addition, it is important to point out the role played by the Dominican Olympic Committee (COD) in conjunction with the Government. This has delivered the ”sufficient funds and just in time” emphasized Camacho.

Although the Government has the obligation and has supported Dominican sport in this case, the non-profit organization Creando Sueños Olímpicos (Creso) has supported Dominican sport and finances many of the resources that our athletes need in order to carry out the task of providing Dominican participants with the necessary resources to participate and succeed in the Olympic Games.

Other results of the Dominican Republic at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games

The Dominican Republic did not do badly at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

In soccer, although they were unable to advance from the group stage, the Dominican Republic scored its first Olympic goal in history. In addition, they beat long-standing teams in the history of the sport such as Spain, Uzbekistan and Egypt, tying with the latter two.

In Volleyball, the Queens of the Caribbean had an ”honorable” participation reaching the quarterfinals in a tournament with the highest level.

Pride in being Dominican

Miguel Camacho said that from 1964 to 2021 the Dominican Republic had only won seven medals. However, in the last three years it has won eight medals, counting the five in Tokyo and the three obtained in this competition.

This is a reason for us to be proud and it shows that we have been doing a good job. What took us 57 years, we overcame in three, there are the results” concluded Camacho.
