The President of the Dominican Republic, Luis Abinader, who this Friday, August 16, Restoration Day, was sworn in to govern for his second term 2024-2028, emphasized in his speech the tourism segment, indicating that the country will surpass the arrival of 11.5 million visitors by the end of the year.
“In 2023, for the first time ever, more than 10 million visitors arrived in the Dominican Republic in one year, which not only confirms that we successfully overcame the pandemic, but demonstrates, that our strategy of rapid opening and reforms, has allowed us to surpass the aspirations that existed before COVID. This year 2024, I anticipate that we will exceed 11.5 million visitors, which consolidates us as the second most visited country in Latin America,” he said.
He stated that the strength of tourism and other sectors allowed us to close 2023 with the highest level of international foreign exchange reserves in history with 15,457 million dollars.
“All these indicators consolidate us as the seventh largest economy in Latin America and are leading us to become a world-class logistics hub, also taking advantage of our privileged geographical position in the Caribbean, a strategic point of world trade,” he said.
The President added that the government is consolidating this with a strong investment in infrastructure that is better connecting the entire country and increasing logistics capabilities.
He recalled that in the past four years two new tourist ports were built and three others are under construction with public-private partnerships. In addition, a new large multimodal logistics dock in Manzanillo, in the north of the country, is already under construction.
Abinader also emphasized that in the past four years the Punta Cana Airport has doubled its facilities, and next year the construction of Terminal 2 of the Santo Domingo Airport (AILA) will begin.
He indicated that this year 2024, construction began on a new terminal at the Santiago Airport and the new Pedernales International Airport.
