FEDA Director highlights Jarabacoa’s agrotourism potential

The director of FEDA, Hecmilio Galván, highlighted the importance of Jarabacoa as a model of ecotourism, agrotourism and sustainable tourism, which, together with its agricultural potential through livestock, coffee, flowers and agroforestry systems can be exported to all cities in the country.

Galván made these statements while making an important tour of this city, where he carried out three activities in an effort to promote family agriculture and support livestock sustainability, initiating the program “Siembra tu Patio, Siembra en Familia” in the Buena Vista municipal district and the Jarabacoa municipality, as well as handing over the new solar energy matrix of the Jarabacoa Cattlemen’s Association.

At the launching of “Siembra tu Patio, Siembra en Familia” Galván highlighted the importance of growing fresh food as a family, promoting healthy and sustainable food and turning Jarabacoa into a greener and more tourism-friendly city. The initiative also reflects a commitment to preserving the environment and improving the quality of life of families. This innovative program seeks to empower the residents of these localities through training in urban gardening and the promotion of sustainable practices.

The launch events, held at the Buena Vista City Hall and Jarabacoa City Hall, brought together community members and local leaders. During these events, a comprehensive training on cultivation techniques adapted to the urban environment, including the efficient management of space and the responsible use of natural resources, and the donation of thousands of fruit tree seedlings and vegetable seeds for the neighbors, took place.

During the tour, Galván also met with the Association of Guanderos de Jarabacoa, to whom he delivered a project donated by FEDA, which included the installation of solar panels in their milk collection center, which has significantly reduced the energy costs of dairy cooling from RD 30,000 to RD 15,000 per month, and will continue to reduce expenses as the project is consolidated.

With this new energy system for the Jarabacoa farmers, there are now 40 associative centers donated by FEDA for the benefit of the country’s livestock sustainability, distributed throughout the South, Southwest, East and North regions.

The tour was attended by Ruben Lulo, deputy director of FEDA; the mayor of Buena Vista, Stanly Ureña, community leaders, local representatives and members of the neighborhood councils.
