Investment of more than US$ 70 MM

President Luis Abinader led this Friday the start of the rehabilitation and expansion works of the Port of Manzanillo with an investment of 70 million dollars.

For this purpose, he delivered the award certificate for the contracting of the company that won the bidding for its construction, which is scheduled to begin on October 3.

During his speech he emphasized that the Manzanillo project is an economic and social development and that this work will serve as a container port and will save a day, in relation to the ports of the South, on its way to the United States, increasing the levels of competitiveness and allowing the free zone of Santiago to export from Manzanillo instead of moving to the ports of the south.

On his side, the Minister of Public Works, Deligne Ascención, emphasized that the project, financed by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), is part of a plan that articulates all the municipalities of the region with the Port of Manzanillo, promoting its industrial, commercial and tourist potential.

Port of Manzanillo will enable integral development

This port will enable the expansion of the country’s agricultural export capacity, with greater exports from the free trade zones and an integral development that will turn the Dominican Republic into the main logistics HUB of the Caribbean.

The works include the construction of the offshore dock, connected to land by an access bridge, administrative buildings, loading and unloading yard, access roads, security, signaling, lighting and other requirements for port facilities.

Reconstruction of the Navarrete-Montecristi highway section

Minister Ascención also spoke of the reconstruction of the Duarte highway from Navarrete to Montecristi with the support of the IDB, in which 90 kilometers will be rehabilitated for US$30 million.

He recalled that a few weeks ago the Guayubín-Copey highway was inaugurated and soon the Navarrete bypass will be started, allowing to reduce in more than one hour the time Santiago-Manzanillo.

President Luis Abinader was accompanied by the ministers of Industry, Commerce and Mipymes, Víctor Bisonó; of Labor, Miguel DeCamps; of Energy and Mines, Antonio Almonte; the president of the Chamber of Deputies, Alfredo Pacheco; the director of Proindustria, Ulises Rodríguez; the administrator of Banco de Reservas, Samuel Pereyra.

Also the provincial governor Nelsy Cruz; senator Ramón Antonio Pimentel, the mayor of Manzanillo, Ignacio Manuel Rosa Núñez, among others.
